IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy)
Better cancer treatment with fewer side effects
IMRT Highlights
Tumors come in all shapes and sizes. Surrounded by healthy tissue, a tumor may be in or near delicate body organs such as the spine, eye, or brain. For example, radiation treatment for prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men, may cause urinary or rectal symptoms because these organs can be contained within the treatment area.
- IMRT is a 3-dimensional radiation therapy that allows precise targeting of tumors resulting in fewer side effects for the patient.
- Because surrounding tissue receives less radiation than with traditional treatment, higher doses can be used, resulting in a higher probability of destroying the cancer.
- IMRT is particularly useful for head, neck, prostate, pancreas, rectum, cervix, uterus and recurring cancers.
- IMRT requires a complex, detailed treatment plan developed by radiation oncologists, physicists, and dosimetrists.
- Treatment is typically provided on an outpatient basis five days a week for six to eight weeks.
- The treatment takes about a half-hour for the patient.
